Relaxation Training DVD
Why is relaxation training important in weight control? The answer is very simple. Research has show that stress leads to increased eating and therefore weight gain. Relaxation Training is a simple but effective way of controlling the effects of stress and thereby reducing this one trigger to excessive food intake.
Research has also shown that people who sleep longer, and are less subject to the effects of daily stress, have more control over their weight. Relaxation Training has the added benefit that it can help you sleep better.
There are many different methods of Relaxation Training but the one I prefer is called Progressive Muscular Relaxation Training. This method is briefly described in Chapter 6 of 'Motivational Guide to Achieving Weight Control'.
This training film demonstrates a series of 17 exercises in which the demonstrator first tenses and then relaxes various muscles (groups of muscles) throughout her body, in order to achieve a feeling of deep relaxation. I put together this unique set of 17 exercises on the basis of longstanding practical experience with the method of Progressive Muscular Relaxation.

Self-Esteem and Successful Weight Control CD
As the majority of us know only too well, the process of achieving successful weight control is DDA (Damn Difficult to Achieve). We therefore need to use all the resources available to us when we are attempting to lose weight; and that includes inner resources as well as outside help. One area of inner resource which is particularly important in this regard is high self-esteem.
So how does high self-esteem help in the process of weight control? Well, its not when everything is going well that self-esteem is important. No, its those times when sticking to your diet and exercise regime seem particularly difficult - those off-days when everything just seems to be such a struggle - that's when a good sense of self-worth comes into its own. When the person with low self-esteem becomes overly self critical and may even give up the attempt at weight control, that's when the individual with a strong sense of self-worth becomes even more committed to the whole process.
Everyone can manage good days - it's the ability to cope with bad days which separates the successful dieter from the one who repeatedly fails. And self-esteem is the key element in this.
So how does someone go about increasing their self-esteem? Contrary to popular belief it is possible to build up your level of self-esteem even when it appears to be at rock bottom. Psychologists have developed self-esteem building tasks and exercises for this very purpose. These usually fall into three areas - (1) changing the way we think about ourselves, (2) changing our behaviour and the world we live in, and (3) changing our relationships with other people.
So I suggest that people who are about to embark on a weight control program should first work on a self-esteem building program. A strong and robust sense of self-worth can work miracles when it comes to those bad days that we all encounter from time to time - indeed it can and will help you weather all types of storms in your quest for successful weight control.
